Tired Japan—How to Overcome Japan’s Sleep Deprivation (Dr. Masashi Yanagisawa, Director and Professor, International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (WPI-IIIS), University of Tsukuba)

post date : 2024.10.01

According to a survey by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), people in Japan sleep an average of 7 hours and 22 minutes, the lowest among 33 OECD member countries, making Japan one of the countries with the least amount of sleep in the world. Low productivity due to a lack of sleep has also been noted, with one estimate suggesting this will have a negative economic impact of 18 trillion yen in 2025. Sleep deprivation also has health risks, potentially leading to depression and arteriosclerosis, and with the significant negative impacts on both the economy and health, improving the situation is urgent.

The FPCJ has invited Dr. Masashi Yanagisawa, a neuroscientist and sleep researcher who discovered orexin, which regulates the sleep-wake cycle, and thus contributed to the development of medicine for treating sleep disorders, to discuss why Japanese people sleep so little, national initiatives to deal with this lack of sleep, and tips for sleeping well.

Please note that you cannot physically attend this briefing, as it will be a Zoom webinar.

FPCJ supporting members and embassy representatives may also participate in the briefing as observers (admission free).
