Press Briefing:“2012 on the Korean Peninsula and Japan”
Dr. Masao OKONOGI, Research Professor, Kyushu University
North Korea has repeatedly trumpeted to its people and the world that the country will become an economically prosperous and militarily powerful country by 2012, the centennial of its founder Kim Il-sung’s birth and the 70th anniversary of Kim Jong-Il’s birth. On the other hand, the South will have a presidential election in December 2012 to choose the successor to President Lee Myung-bak. Looking at the other members of the six-party talks, in the same year the United States will also have a presidential election, and Chinese and Russian leadership will change.
In such a critical year, how will the situation in the Korean Peninsula evolve and what will happen to Japan-South Korea and Japan-North Korea relations? The fate of the currently-suspended Japan-Korea EPA negotiations is also worthy of attention. FPCJ has invited Dr. Okonogi, an outstanding Korea expert, to share his views.
Time & Date: 15:00-16:30, December 8 (Thu)
Place: Foreign Press Center/Japan (6th floor, Nippon Press Center Bldg.)
Language: Japanese (with English interpretation)
