At the G7 Hiroshima Summit held in May this year, the G7 leaders encountered the realities of the atomic bombing, visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, speaking with atomic bomb survivors, and presenting flowers at the Cenotaph for the Victims of the Atomic Bomb. With video of this released around the world, the momentum towards a world without nuclear weapons has increased. As the only country to have been atomic bombed during a war, how should Japan seize this opportunity to send a message to further increase momentum toward global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation initiatives?
As the mayor of a city devasted by an atomic bomb and as president of Mayors for Peace, which has approximately 8000 member cities worldwide, Mr. Kazumi Matsui, the mayor of Hiroshima, has worked for years towards bringing about a peaceful world without nuclear weapons. The FPCJ has invited him to discuss the significance of the G7 Hiroshima Summit and the message he would like to send to the world at this year’s Peace Memorial Ceremony.
