I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your continued understanding and support of Foreign Press Center Japan (FPCJ) and its endeavors.
I am pleased to announce the complete renewal of the FPCJ’s website. The redesigned site presents our activities and latest initiatives in a clear format, while providing easy access to information on the various services through which we serve as a facilitator between members of the foreign media and Japanese society. The website also presents our achievements in supporting foreign journalists and disseminating information in an easily digestible format, ensuring that visitors can readily access information of value. I encourage you to explore and make full use of the new site.
The FPCJ will mark its 50th anniversary on October 1, 2026. For half a century since its founding, we have steadfastly supported foreign journalists in their reporting activities, serving as a trusted partner connecting Japan to the world, and ensuring that diverse and accurate coverage of Japan reaches audiences across the globe.
In today’s world, facing shared challenges such as climate change and demographic transformation, the importance of sharing Japan’s experience and expertise as a harbinger nation has never been greater. Looking ahead, the FPCJ will continue to strengthen our foreign media network and leverage new digital opportunities to facilitate deeper understanding and foster empathy for Japan.

Connecting Japan with the World by Supporting Reporting by Foreign Media

Since is establishment, Foreign Press Center Japan (FPCJ) has engaged in a variety of support activities for members of the foreign media to help ensure an accurate understanding overseas of the reality of Japan.
There are currently 431 reporters affiliated with 145 media organizations from 30 countries and regions working in Japan to transmit news from Japan to the world (data gathered by the FPCJ as of February 1, 2025). Many journalists also temporarily visit Japan to report on it.
The FPCJ provides a wide range of support for the reporting activities of these foreign journalists, and for disseminating information from Japan to other countries through the media.

MISSION

Mission

The FPCJ proactively supports the reporting activities of foreign media in order to promote the diversity and accuracy of foreign reporting from Japan, as well as working to have valuable information sent out to the world on a variety of topics from throughout Japan.
By showing the world what Japan is really like and improving global understanding of Japan, the FPCJ contributes to building an international community in which people respect each others’ cultures and values.
In this way, the FPCJ aims to enact change for the sake of world peace and progress.

Our Activities

  • Mainly for foreign media in Japan, FPCJ holds briefings given by leading experts and government officials and also organizes press tours to introduce news from many regions of Japan to the world.
  • The FPCJ invites foreign journalists for a report-in-Japan program and also conducts fellowship programs for young journalists from developing countries in cooperation with Japanese media.
  • The FPCJ helps foreign journalists, both resident and visiting, with practical arrangements for news gathering and filming based on their requests. It arranges interviews with people in various fields, on-site reporting on factories, institutes, and other facilities, and also provides advice and basic information on reporting in Japan.
  • The FPCJ collects information from a wide range of fields including politics, economy, society, and culture and makes it available through its website as well as social media in many languages.
  • The FPCJ is keen to link and work with central / local governments, public and private organizations, research institutes and companies, who wish to globally publicize their activities, providing advice and assistance in a positive manner.
  • For research on the current status of the foreign media, FPCJ personnel go on fact-finding trips to overseas to visit media and media-related organizations, and interact with them.
  • The FPCJ makes every effort in inventing activities to achieve our mission.

History and Timeline

  • 1976

    Establishment

    Foreign Press Center Japan (FPCJ), jointly funded by the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association and Keidanren, was founded as an incorporated foundation. In order to increase the understanding of Japan in people around the world, began activities including providing reporting assistance to foreign journalists and holding fellowship programs.

    Change to a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation

    With this change, the FPCJ has continued to support reporting by the foreign media on Japan and dissemination of information overseas, through activities even more in the public interest.
