Four out of the ten plates (lithosphere) that cover the surface of the earth lie beneath the Japanese archipelago, which makes Japan an earthquake-prone country; earthquakes in Japan account for 10% of all the quakes occurring around the world. In fact, a phenomenon equivalent to that of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake (1995, M7.3) is rumbling around Japan once or twice a year. Japan is also one of the leading countries in earthquake research. Since this year marks the 80th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923, M7.9), FPC has asked Dr. Hideki Shimamura of Hokkaido University to share his views and expertise on earthquakes in Japan. Do not miss this occasion.
