he Japanese Government declared in its Monthly Economic Report of May that Japan's economy had in effect bottomed out. The Tankan survey in June released by the Bank of Japan indicates that business confidence among Japanese firms has greatly improved. However, because of the falling US stock prices, the weakening dollar, and other factors, the future of export and capital investment cannot be optimistically projected. Anxiety about business prospects is also said to be growing. In these circumstances, Mr. Yuji Shimanaka, Director General of the Investment Research Department, UFJ Institute Ltd., says,''Business will stay fair until the first half of the FY 2003.'' FPC has invited Mr. Shimanaka to share his views with us on the future of the Japanese economy.
