 Mr. Nobuo Tanaka

Global Associate for Energy Security and Sustainability at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan
Former Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA)

One year and nine months have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the ensuing accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. After the accident in Fukushima, nation-wide discussion continues over the pros and cons of nuclear power generation and the energy policy. The Noda administration decided to restart No. 3 and No. 4 reactors of the Oi Nuclear Power Plant in July 2012. On the other hand, the call for denuclearization is strong and the “Innovative Strategy for Energy and the Environment” was approved by the Cabinet in September to aim at “zero nuclear power plant operation in the 2030s”. The problem of nuclear power generation and future energy policy is a big controversial issue even among politicians and it is one of the salient issues in the forthcoming Lower House election.

FPCJ will invite Mr. Nobuo Tanaka, Global Associate for Energy Security and Sustainability at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan, to talk about Japanese energy policy and its future prospects. The institute has been making analyses of and proposals for Japanese policies related to energy and the environment since its establishment in 1966.
